Marble Falls baseball has many Mustangs named all-district

When the Marble Falls High School baseball team captured the District 24-4A championship for the first time in 20 years, it stands to reason the Mustangs have a team full of “studs,” as one head coach of a member program noted.

Many of his counterparts agreed as the all-district lists reflect it.

“I think it worked out really well,” Mustangs head coach Tyler Porter said. “The kids who deserved things got them. There are kids who stand out.”

Senior Cale Cochran, who was 5-0 in district play with a save, was named the District’s Most Valuable Player.

“Cale is the epitome of that,” Porter said. “Cale just works. He works so hard and cares so much.”

Cochran, who recently signed his National Letter of Intent to play for Southwestern University, also will play in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association’s All-Star Game June 17-18 at Round Rock’s Dell Diamond. A day after the season ended, the Mustang called his coach and asked if he could get in the batting cage.

“He’ll represent Marble Falls well,” Porter said.

Senior Bryce Atkinson (5-1 in district play, 1-0 in the playoffs) was named the District’s Pitcher of the Year.

Atkinson, who was the Tuesday starter, was improving every outing.

“He was doing very well,” Porter said. “We slowed Bryce down to where he was throwing strikes. He was even keel like he was in the zone. He’s a really good pitcher. He played multiple sports. He’s a good runner, he ran cross country. He’s been a really good guy.”

Freshman Canon Cochran is the co-Newcomer of the Year.

“He’s a kid that’s still coming,” Porter said. “He played a little second base. He was hitting .400 in district. He could slide under you. That speaks well.”

First team all-district members include senior shortstop Jake Carter, junior utility player Davis Dreisbach, junior outfielder Evan Nickowski, and junior catcher Isaias Roman.

“It surprised me how little people ran on us,” Porter said. “Having Isaias was big for us.”

Senior first baseman Brady Elwartowski was named to the second team.

Honorable mention honors went to third baseman Kyle Curtis and designated hitter A.J. Scovil, who are both seniors.

Carter, Cale Cochran and Elwartowski are named second team academic all-state by the Texas High School Coaches Association,

As he reflected on the season, Porter said he hopes the returners will continue what the class of 2023 has done.

“All these awards are great,” he said. “This group of seniors have been unbelievable for this school and program. They showed them how to do it. Best group of seniors I’ve ever had. I’m glad to see them all get recognition. I can’t praise them enough. Ten years from now when we’re still winning, it’s because these kids did it right.”
